Matcha is a type of green tea and my new addiction, as an ingredient in smoothies! Similar to leafy greens, matcha can help give you an instant energy boost. It has a smooth, creamy texture that makes it a perfect ingredient in smoothies (if you like your drinks creamy).
Matcha is rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals. Antioxidants help rid the body of free radicals just floating around waiting to get into our cells and cause damage. Phytochemicals are what the plant produces to protect itself. There are no nutritional benefits of phytochemicals, but humans can also benefit from their protective qualities just like plants. Antioxidants are an example of phytochemicals. Another popular phytochemical is allicin, which is found in garlic and has antibacterial properties.
The coconut kefir I used in this recipe I got from a friend who used a special technique, and if you are interested in making your own, here is a link that will help you get started. If you would like to buy kefir, or yogurt for that matter, I highly recommend reading the labels for harmful ingredients and added sugars. The less sugar the better!
This smoothie is the perfect blend of protein, healthy fats, and natural energy. I hope you love this recipe as much as we do!
